| Letter from Damo - 15 December 2004 |
Howayiz, Damo here chattin to yous from London, roll out the bardel and all that, just mixin n' tweekin the oul album here,me and John have been working very hard on it since i got back from the US.Thanks to all your support and the success in Ireland of Seize the Day and a little bit of Sony finance im in the brilliant position this time to be able to be here for all the recording, mixing and mastering.Alot of the stuff your going to hear on this album was recorded live in a studio in Wales called Rockfield[where Queen done Bohemian Rhapsody,Oasis done Morning Glory, and the Stone Roses,Led Zepplin and Joe Strummer all recorded albums to name just a few].There was me,John,Justin Adams,Clare Kenny and Eamo DeBarra playin live together in the studio, just like they used to do it.We were all in one room that had sliding glass doors that seperated me from John and the kit so he wouldnt feed into my guitar and vocal mikes. He was right beside me and we were only separated by glass so we could make eye contact when either of us wanted the song to kick ass or when either of us felt things should ease up,we both agreed that we wanted to try and capture that live feel this time and get a tough sound to compliment the tough songs that are on this album['Patience' is probably the hardchaw of the album].If im lucky enough to do more albums after this one thats the route im gonna take, just for the energy and electricity of 5 people playin together, making eye contact and sensin each others groove, that 6th sense thing you get with a like minded soulful player.Clare and Justin were playin into amps that were in different rooms being recorded so they were both right in front of me with no partition, and Eamo was in an old vocal booth just to the right of me so his flute, whistle and b.v's were seperated from my mikes.I think on average we done around three takes of every song and we recorded about seventeen songs, ten or so of which will be chosen for the album when we work out the strongest ones. The songs have a more live feel than my earlier recordings and people have always told me that im better live and i agree with them so this is the way forward i reckon. There was a grand piano there aswell so i played a bit of that on a few songs, fairly limited but it sat nicely in places.Eamo who's a lovely piano player stuck down a bit aswell so with a bit of luck people might think i played the parts he played and vice versa,ha ha!
The studio is about a mile outside the town of Monmouth and is an old converted farmhouse and stables and is surrounded by rolling hills that are actually the begining of the famous Welsh valleys and theres no neighbours for half a mile in either direction so there was no distractions but to tell you the truth im used to geansey loads of houses and lamposts and trains and buses and traffic so i was glad i had my brown trousers on when one night after dark i had to walk around a hundred yards alone up the tree lined lane to the cottage we were stayin in and as i broke into a sprint half way up the lane when a cows head came over a wall to the left of me i thought to meself,'jaysus your some handbag Dempsey'.I blame it on an overactive imagination and bein allowed watch films like Damian Omen[which i just had to see because of the title],and the Exorcist at the tender ages of 5 and 7.Once im anywhere dark and alone and that Omen music, yknow that scary ass operatic female vocal piece of music that even scares the shite out of me when they use it on Only Fools and Horses, once that goes on the mental turntable give me a wide berth coz anything coming unexpectedly out of the shadows is fair game for a bit of hit and run unfortunatly, even a Granny with a nice cup of tea for me.
I got DeBarra lovely one night,he had left something behind in the studio which is down the end of the treelined lane and it was a windy night aswell,ha ha! I was sittin down reading the paper and just as he was goin out the door i looked up over the paper and says to him 'youll never guess whats on tonight Eamo,Damian Omen, remember that film.It has me favourite scene of all time in it,yknow the part where the Rottweilers are chasin your man through the graveyard after he opens up the babys coffin and finds the mark of the beast on its head'.Eamo looked thoughtful and said 'ah,nice one,i'll be back in a minute' .About three minutes later i heard a pair of feet tearing up the gravel driveway and Eamo burst in through the door and slammed it shut behind him lookin all pale and sweaty.'Alright' i casually enquired.'I couldnt get the lights on in the studio,i had to fumble around in the dark, why did ye have to mention the Omen to me Dempsey' he says.'Jaysus sorry man' says i,'i wasnt thinkin'.
Anyway my friends, sorry for boring you with my Monmouth anecdotes, cut a long story less long i think the albums shapin up nicely and its lookin like a March release and a tour of Ireland and then Britain around then, again im sorry about dissapointin yiz all with the cancelled tour but these couple of months will fly through and we will soon be united once more so we can raise the roof together.Hope you all have a loving Christmas and a few nice ding dongs thrown in for good measure,05 is gonna be a cracker,

| A NOTE FROM DAMO - 29 October 2004 |
Howayiz all doin’ my friends, this is Damo here writing to you from Texas. I’m 17 gigs down on the Morrissey tour with 3 more to go and we had to pull the last 3 gigs in L.A. and Las Vegas because I need to have the third album finished by January 1st if the album is to be released before the summer and I really want to get it out there. I need to start working full time on it now if I’m going to get it right and this is why I had to pull the tour of Ireland in November and December and the Pogues and Shane MacGowan support slots I had. It kills me to do this, for you may have noticed how much I love playing to an up-for-it audience and I’m sorry if I’ve disappointed anyone but I’ll make it up to you in the New Year, I swear, with tons of gigs and hopefully a decent third album. But it will only be decent if I get stuck in now and try out lots of different things.
I’ve done some great gigs here in places like Radio City, NYC (Sinatra, Billie Holiday , Nina Simone, Stevie Wonder) and the original Grand Ole Opry in Nashville (Elvis, Willie Nelson, Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash). It’s been daunting walking out on my own each night for me with just a guitar and the truth as I see it, to play in front of thousands of people who aren’t there to see me and maybe won’t get me, but as I say in one of my newer songs, "this life ain’t nuthin’ without challenges". The sleepless nights before I came to America will stay with me and the lonely hours pacing up and down in cold tiny unkempt dressing rooms in the bowels of cavernous ballrooms full of somebody else’s fans are stark memories but every night I get on that stage and do my best and once I know I done the best I’m happy enough. I always get a good cheer at the end of the set, I’ve gotten one or two boo’s but not everyone’s gonna like you. I think a lot of Morrissey’s fans are getting me, they’re a fairly even-minded bunch, thanks to Jaysus, some nights I’d need sub-titles but most of them get the gist. If they give me a chance I mostly play Factories, Negative, Party On, Seize, Ghosts, Apple and All Good.
Eamo (Eamonn de Barra) was meant to come over with me; the American USA people haven’t given him a working visa yet. They must think he’d be shooting poison darts at George Bush through his tin whistle, not a bad idea come to think of it.
I’ll come back to Ireland a stronger character I reckon though. Definitely heavier if not stronger. I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for all your support and your patience and your open minds and your love right back at yiz. Youse all made the last few years very special for me and I’ve built up a lot of new confidence from these years and all the great gigs that I’ve gone to see youse all perform at. I’ve about 15 songs to choose from for the next album, you’ll recognise a few of them: Party On, Sing All Our Cares Away, Not On Your Own Tonight, Cursed With A Brain, then there’s Spaceship, Was Concrete Valleys, Hold Me, Patience, St Patrick’s Day, Choctaw Nation, Spray Paint Back Alleys, Serious and Anywhere You Go. We also might redo Colony.
I’ll be doing a lot of these songs live in the New Year to get all your opinions on them, should be interesting. I’m on stage in 10 minutes so I better throw a shape. Keep the faith my friends and remember "we are all in the gutter but some of us are lookin’ at the stars".
See youse all soon
Much love
Damo
